Patron of grocers, military, mariners, paratroopers, police, and sickness
Not only is Saint Michael found in the Christian Bible, he is also found in the Hebrew Bible, New Testament, and the Quran.
Saint Michael is one of the principle angels and his name translated into “Who is like to God?” Michael’s name was the war-cry of the good angels in the battle fought against Lucifer and his followers in heaven.
God called upon Saint Michael when the angel Lucifer decided that he did not want to be ruled by God, but wanted to rule the kingdom of heaven himself. He figured himself just as beautiful, power, and important as God. Lucifer gathered up many angels that felt the same way; that didn’t want to be less important than God. Lucifer formed a Great Army; marched up to God and said “We are just as important as you. Why should you be the King of Heaven any more than one of us? We are Strong and Proud and Beautiful, and we will fight you for the Kingdom of Heaven.” God warned Lucifer to think about what he was doing, but he had already made up his mind. God then called upon Michael the Archangel, who formed a Mighty Army of Angels, which fought on God’s side. The battle took place, Lucifer lost and was banned from ever returning to Heaven.
September 29th is St. Michael’s Day; it is the Feast of St. Michael, St. Gabriel and St. Raphael, and of All Angels, because they helped God win the battle against Lucifer.
Saint Michael the Archangel’s Prayer
St. Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our defense against the wickedness and snares of the Devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray,
and do thou,
O Prince of the heavenly hosts,
by the power of God,
thrust into hell Satan,
and all the evil spirits,
who prowl about the world
seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.
