Patron Saint of Archers, Athletes and all Soldiers
Sebastian joined the army in the year of 283 and whilst in the army, converted countless of people; many by curing their diseases, including his wife Zoe. He entered the army to defend the confessors and martyrs of his day. Sebastian was named captain in the praetorian guards by Emperor Diocletian. The Emperor persecuted Christians and was unaware that Sebastian was one. Eventually Diocletian discovered that Sebastian was a Christian and order him to be put to death. He was shot with arrows and just left to die. When the widow of St. Castulus went to recover his body, she found him still alive and nursed him back to health. Once he regained his strength, Sebastian went to confront the emperor about his cruelty toward Christians. The Emperor did not take lightly to this and order Sebastian to be beaten to death.
Sebastian in the patron of archers, athletes, soldiers and is appealed to for protection against plagues. Because of all that he had to endure physically and his energetic way of spreading Christianity, he was named the Patron of athletes. He was named the patron soldiers for defending the martyrs and keeping the faith in others when so many Christians were being persecuted.
